How to Split a PDF File
Follow these steps to separate your PDF into exactly the pages or sections you need.
-
Upload Your PDF
Click the upload zone or drag and drop a PDF file into it. Once the file loads, the tool will read its total page count and display it below the upload area, giving you a reference when setting up your split options. Only standard, non-password-protected PDFs are supported.
-
Choose a Split Mode
Select from four modes depending on your goal: Every Page creates one file per page, Custom Ranges lets you define any grouping (e.g. 1–3, 4–6), Every N Pages divides the document into equal-sized chunks, and Extract Range pulls a single continuous block of pages into one output file. See the mode guide below for details on each.
-
Enter Range or Chunk Settings (if applicable)
For Custom Ranges, type comma-separated page ranges in the input field — for example
1-3, 4-6, 7-10. For Every N Pages, set the desired chunk size using the number input. For Extract Range, enter a single range such as3-8. Page numbers always start at 1 and refer to the order pages appear in the document. -
Click "Split PDF"
Once a file is uploaded and your settings are configured, the Split PDF button becomes active. Click it to begin processing. A progress bar will appear showing the operation's status. Like the merge tool, all processing happens entirely within your browser — no files are sent to any external server.
-
Download Your Split Files
When splitting is complete, individual download buttons appear for each output file in the results section. Each file is labeled according to the page range it contains so you can easily identify which piece is which. Download them individually as needed.
💡 Pro Tips
- Use Every Page mode when you want full flexibility — you can then selectively merge specific single-page files using the Merge PDF tool.
- When using Custom Ranges, pages can overlap between ranges if needed (e.g.
1-5, 3-7is valid). - For long reports, use Every N Pages to create evenly-sized chapter files ready for sharing.
- The Extract Range mode is ideal when you only need a small section of a large document — it's faster than downloading every page.
- If your PDF is password-protected, remove the password first using a PDF unlock tool before splitting.
Understanding the Split Modes
Each mode is designed for a different splitting scenario — here's when to use each one.
Every Page
Splits the entire PDF so that each page becomes its own standalone file. A 12-page document produces 12 separate PDFs. Best used when you need maximum flexibility to recombine pages later.
Input: 8-page PDF → 8 filesCustom Ranges
You define exactly which pages go into each output file using comma-separated ranges. Each range becomes its own PDF. Perfect for splitting a document into predefined sections like chapters or chapters.
1-3, 4-6, 7-10Every N Pages
Automatically divides the document into equal chunks of N pages each. The final chunk may have fewer pages if the total isn't evenly divisible. Great for splitting large documents into equal parts for review or distribution.
N=3 on 10 pages → 3, 3, 3, 1Extract Range
Extracts one continuous block of pages into a single output file. Ideal when you need just one specific section of a document without splitting the rest. Produces exactly one output file.
3-8 → one 6-page PDFCommon Use Cases for PDF Splitting
PDF splitting is a practical task across a wide range of professional and personal scenarios.
Extract a Single Chapter
Pull one chapter out of a lengthy eBook or technical manual to share with a colleague without sending the entire document.
Separate Scanned Invoices
When a batch scan combines multiple invoices into one file, split each page into its own PDF for individual filing or upload to an accounting system.
Divide a Contract Into Sections
Send only the relevant clauses or annexures to each party in a multi-party agreement rather than sharing the entire confidential document.
Split Study Materials
Divide a complete course PDF into weekly reading chunks so students receive only the pages they need for each session.
Extract a Specific Page
Retrieve a single certificate, signature page, or diagram from a multi-page report for standalone use or re-insertion into another document.
Prepare Email Attachments
Split a large proposal into smaller files to stay under email attachment size limits while keeping all content accessible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about splitting PDFs with this tool.
-
No. All PDF splitting happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your file is never transmitted to any server, stored remotely, or shared with third parties. This makes the tool safe for sensitive documents such as legal contracts, medical records, or confidential business files. Once you close or refresh the browser tab, no trace of the file remains.
-
Custom Ranges produces multiple output files — one per range you define. For example, entering
1-3, 4-6, 7-9creates three separate PDF files. Extract Range is designed to produce a single output file from one continuous page span. If you only need one specific section (such as pages 5 through 12), Extract Range is the simpler and more direct choice. Use Custom Ranges when you need to divide the document into several distinct parts in one operation. -
Yes. This tool splits PDFs at the page level regardless of whether pages contain selectable text or scanned images. A scanned document is simply a PDF where each page is an embedded image, and the splitter handles it the same way as any other PDF. The output files will also be image-based, preserving the original scan quality exactly.
-
No. Splitting is a lossless operation. The tool extracts page streams from the original PDF without re-rendering, re-compressing, or modifying any content. Images retain their original resolution, text remains searchable (if it was searchable in the source), and vector graphics are unaffected. The output files are byte-for-byte equivalent to the corresponding pages of the source document.
-
Password-protected PDFs are not supported by this tool. If you attempt to upload one, an error message will appear. To split a protected PDF, you must first remove its password using a PDF unlock or decrypt tool, then upload the unlocked version here. This restriction exists because the underlying PDF library cannot access the encrypted page contents without the correct decryption key.
-
There is no hard limit set by the tool itself. The practical constraint is your browser's available memory. For most desktop computers, PDFs of several hundred pages or files up to several hundred megabytes process without issue. On mobile devices or older hardware, very large files may cause the browser to slow down. If you encounter performance issues, try splitting the document in two passes — first split it roughly in half, then split each half separately.
-
Custom Ranges work with contiguous page spans (e.g.
2-5), but each range in the comma-separated list can be any valid span. So while a single range must be sequential (you cannot write1,3,5in a single range slot), you can define as many ranges as needed. For example,1-1, 3-3, 5-5would produce three separate single-page files for pages 1, 3, and 5 respectively. -
Hyperlinks that point to external URLs are generally preserved in the split output pages. However, internal cross-references — such as a link on page 2 pointing to page 15 — may become broken if page 15 is not included in the same output file. Document-level bookmarks (the table of contents panel in PDF readers) may not carry over to split files. If navigational structure is important, you may need to update links and bookmarks in a dedicated PDF editor after splitting.
-
The most efficient workflow is to use Every Page mode here to generate one file per page. You then get a set of individual single-page PDFs. Next, use the Merge PDF tool on this site — upload the pages you want and drag them into your desired sequence before merging. This two-step approach gives you complete control over the final page order without any third-party software.
-
The tool is completely free to use and does not add any watermarks, branding, or metadata to your output files. There are no sign-up requirements, no usage caps, and no premium tier required for any of the split modes. The output PDFs are clean and identical in content to the corresponding pages of your source document.
